I want to register my disapproval regarding the proposed real property tax increases for rental properties. I own
a home in Kona (74 -5198 Kanai Place) as well as a rental property in the same neighborhood (74 -5104
Palihiolo Place), but currently have to reside on the mainland due to caring for my 96- year -old mom. I have
tenants in both places, have faithfully paid taxes for years, and will find it a hardship to have increased taxes.
As it is, with property values dropping, foreclosures and short sales, there is stiff competition for rental property
tenants (not vacation rental), and thus I've been having to borrow each month from my home equity line in
order to cover the mortgage on the rental property on Palihiolo Place.
This will be a hardship, and a detriment to those of us who are already experiencing hardship regarding long-
term tenants paying enough rent to cover costs. An increase in property taxes for rental properties will only
mean I have to borrow more money to cover that.
