I am Mary Begier, President of Hawaii Island Chamber of Commerce. We
have over 700 members from over 300 companies Island wide. Our members
are small business people ranging from farmers to high tech companies. Some
are sole proprietors others employee over 100 people. The one thing they have
in common and the main reason they join an organization like ours is they don't
have time to come to meetings like this. They faithfully pay their dues and ask
that we watch out for their best interest.
We have a Government Affairs Committee that is the main conduit to watch
what happens in the government relations arena. They like myself are all
volunteers. Our GAC committee met and asked that I provide the following
statement:
"We feel that the Mayor and his staff have taken sufficient time in budget
preparation to assure that areas where savings and cuts could be taken, without
jeopardizing the safety, security and health of our citizens and visitors has been
addressed prior to raising of property tax rates in certain categories to balance
the budget."
They continue to ask, "Noting that the Administration should be diligent in
reviewing operational procedures, procurement and staffing while
administering the budget, looking for cost saving over this budget cycle, we
support the Mayor's budget proposal ".
