Subject: Proposed Property Tax Increase COUN
TESTIMONY RE: PROPOSED PROPERTY TAX INCREASE:
Dear Mayor Kenoi and County Council:
I am very opposed to your proposal to increase the property taxes by over 28% for non - residents. Those
increases will likely be passed along to renters and will further hurt those who may already be struggling.
Those who do not rent out their properties are likely only part-time residents who use County resources far less
than permanent residents. It is underhanded to increase taxes on part-time residents — those without a vote in
the County government. This is a case of taxation without representation!
I strongly resent that although non - residents use fewer County resources, you propose to shift the burden of a
budget deficit upon them. I am troubled that this is the way you choose to govern. Your thinking is shortsighted
and unseemly.
Finding ways to cut expenses is a more prudent way to address the budget deficit, particularly during a recession.
That's what families and businesses do when times are tough — they cut back on expenses. Why should Hawaii
County be any different? Aren't there already way too many foreclosures? Why make it worse for homeowners?
Compare your proposed tax of $9.10 to Maui's rate of $4.85. Where do you think people will look to purchase
their second homes in the future? Where will the tourist dollars go?
Don't try for a quick fix. Get creative. Be smart. Find ways to cut expenses!
Sincerely,
Patty parker
