Subject: Bill 263 - 2% Land Fund Charter Amendment.
Dear Councilmembers,
Hawaii the "Big Island" is the most important Island because it offers such diverse land
systems. Used wisely, it could nutrure the State of Hawaii for years to come. Used by a
few wealthy persons or corporations for "quick investor profit," the Big Island could
easily be turned into chaotic, sprawling development. If you look from the mauka roads
toward the sea in Kohala /Kona or look out the window while flying home from Honolulu
along the Hamakua and N. Hilo coasts, you see the beginning of the sprawl that will grow
in intensity as time goes on.
Only twenty years ago the peace over the lands were still quite evident. Today, there is
an urgency that's very evident. Urgency to build and grow or urgency to preserve, protect
and grow. In either case, there is no stopping the growth that will certainly take place
on the Big Island. Our actions today, will never be able to keep the land preserved
forever. Progress, destiny has it's own course. We can simply help to stem the tide of
unreasonable and flagrant profiteering off the land we hold dear, today and hopefully into
the future for generations to come.
In 2006, sixty -three percent of the voting public approved the 2% land fund. Even if
passed and made an amendment to the Charter, this amount will never match the private
money that will come into Hawaii to develop and profit from. You all know this. Think of
tomorrow not today when you make your decision because it is in tomorrow that our future
will manifest and our (your) decisions today will be the guide.
