I invited Tina Owens, the executive director of the Lost Fish Coalition to do a 30- minute
presentation on August 2, 2010 in regard to aquarium fish collection and the impact this has on
the fish population which affects our fish sustainability.
Tina Owens, a 25 year resident of Hawai`i and a 17 year resident of West Hawai`i, is the
executive director of the Lost Fish Coalition, a grassroots organization formed in 1997 to ban the
taking of reef fish from West Hawai`i waters. When Act 306 calling for management of the
aquarium industry in West Hawai`i was passed in 1998, the Lost Fish Coalition agreed to
participate by maintaining a seat on the West Hawai`i Fisheries Council. Ms. Owens has been
actively involved in developing management rules and regulations for the aquarium industry in
order to ensure that West Hawai`i continues to have healthy and abundant reef fish populations.
The presentation will show the huge effort already devoted to attempting to manage the
aquarium industry here, the economic impact that the industry has, the pressure of a too -large
and basically as yet unregulated industry on fish populations, and how non - compliance by
collectors makes this essentially an unsustainable industry, and how this industry effects our fish
sustainability and one of our food sources.
