Subject: SUPPORT - Resolution. 363 -10 Disallowing Reef Fish Collection for Export
Dear Council members,
Thank you for this opportunity. I support this resolution because:
Reef fish, like the Uhu, are Hawaii's "sand makers." One healthy adult Uhu can produce up to a ton
of sand per year. Hawaii's beaches are eroding because the sourcing of sand has not kept pace
with the net losses. Our beaches need the protection of the reef fish. What would Hawaii be without
it's beaches and healthy reefs?
Reef fish are critical to reef health, beauty and abundance. They are not ornaments!
Reef fish support both reef and open water ecosystems. They are not ornaments!
Healthy, abundant ecosystems support ALL of Hawai' i's people and visitors in a multitude of ways;
it's part of our culture and our economy. Do not be short - sighted on this issue. The few aquarium
trade jobs are nothing compared to the collapse of our tourism economy if we abandon the heath
of the fish, reef and beaches!
Please pass this resolution without further delay!
