Regarding Resolution 363 -10 recommending that the DLNR disallow the collection of
reef fish around the Big Island of Hawaii, we heartily disagree! Ourselves, Walter and
Theresa Andreae, are appalled at this discriminatory recommendation by Councilman
Greenwell. Kona is a fishing community. How can we separate fish collecting for export
from commercial fishing of any sort. As a Kona fishing family we feel our life style
threatened by politicos pushing an unfounded environmental philosophical agenda. This
agenda will direly affect countless individuals and families. THIS IS NOT THE TIME
TO PUNISH RESPECTFUL ENTRAPRENURES! The vast majority of fishermen and
collectors cherish and take respectful care of our ocean environment and its creatures.
They are the true stewards. Others who impact our reefs such as the Diving Charters
remain unhindered and unthreatened, and smelling very fishy. THIS RESOLUTION IS
BIASED AND BRAZENLY DISCRIMINATORY AGAINST THE LIVELYHOOD OF
ONE GROUP!
We are concerned that Councilman Greenwell is INCONSISTANT with his proposals,
especially those concerning environmental protection. If science is needed employ the
wisdom and experience of the collectors themselves who have been providing detailed
data of fish populations for years. And oceanographers who understand ocean currents
and natural events that also affect populations. Partner with them do not put them out of
business. In Hawaii we can work together.
Let us encourage respectful entrepreneurship in Hawaii County. We trust the Council
will responsibly vote against this discriminatory resolution # 363 -10.
Sincerely,
Walter and Theresa Andreae
