Subject: SUPPORT - Reso. 363 -10 Disallowing Reef Fish Collection for Export
Dear Councilmembers,
Thank you for this opportunity to speak on behalf of thousands of people that visit these islands each year. As
you know, Reef fish are critical to reef health, overall beauty and abundance. They are not ornaments and
shouldn't be treated as an inexhaustible resource. They are critical to the health of the reefs that we all love. A
very shallow understanding of the ecology of reef systems will lead any unbiased person to reason that collection
of our fish here in Hawai'I by the thousands will, in a short time span, cause reef degradation, bleaching and
eventual death and collapse. It is important to understand that reef fish support both reef and open water
ecosystems. They are not ornaments!
Healthy, abundant ecosystems support ALL of Hawai'i's people and visitors - not just a few. This is why I strongly
encourage you to pass resolution 363 -10, disallowing reef fish collection for export.
