Resolution 363 -10 Supporting
To — Chair Naeole- Beason and Councilmembers
PLEASE SUPPORT RESOLUTION 363 -10: Recommending that the DLNR disallow the collection of reef
fish for export from the island of Hawaii.
Hawaii is one of the major exporters of aquarium fish. The way these wild fish are captured, held and
shipped causes unacceptable numbers of deaths. They need our protection! This fish trade involves
over 20 million animals and 99% of these are wild caught. These types of fish have declined by 59%
over the past 20 years in Hawaii due to over collecting.
We must protect our reef ecosystem and collecting these fish for the pet trade is harmful to our wild
population.
Hawaii County needs to step up and protect and preserve these species for our residents and visitors.
It is not only the right thing to do but is also in our own economic best interest.
