Subject: SUPPORT - Reso. 363 -10 Disallowing Reef Fish Collection for Export
Aloha County Council,
As a 25 -year Kona business owner /operator I am in support of Reso 363 -10 Disallowing
Reef Fish Collection for Export. We have received many, many calls over the years from
visitors who are distraught over the unlimited aquarium extraction on the Big Island. The
aquarium trade is heartless and renegade.
Thank you for this resolution. Please consider a permitting ordinance and /or a
humane treatment ordinance like those now in process on Maui. Keep in mind that the
Honokohou fish kill underscored a disjunction in Hawaii law, whereby DLNR conducted the
investigation on that travesty. DLNR manages fisheries, and aquarium collecting is not a
fishery but an extractor of wildlife for the pet trade. Pet trade animals are protected by
a different set of laws, and DLNR is in violation. The attorney general is now looking
into this illegal situation.
Please pass this resolution on this outlaw extraction.
