Aloha, Council members,
I understand that you are considering a resolution to ban fish collection
in West Hawaii very soon.
I hope you will pass this resolution. The damage done to the shoreline
(and even deep water) fish in West Hawaii in the past, as well as the
progress made in the few areas where they were protected until the
fish collectors recently decided to ignore some bans, show that nothing
but banning collection will help our oceanic environment to recover and
thrive.
Given the acidification of the world "s oceans, the bleaching of coral, the
volcano of oil we have been watching in the Gulf of Mexico, and the increase
in oceanic temperatures over the past few years, we need to give the oceans
every break we can to try to stay alive. Removing fish from the ocean is just
the opposite.
In addition, the fact that the vast majority of fish collected from West Hawaii
die before they ever make it to a consumer's fish tank leaves this industry
both as unsustainable and tragic in its effects.
Let us join Australia in the manner used there to protect its Great Barrier
Reef -- banning fish collection. We cannot afford, both as residents of
Kona and as citizens of the world, to do less.
