Dear Councilmembers,
Please support the resolution re. banning aquarium fish collecting around Hawai'i Island.
If we want to create jobs, we should evaluate the option of sustainably -run aquarium fish farms.
The current collecting system brings serious risks - --
• algae overgrowth as algae- eating fish are removed
• destruction of live coral
• extinction of species found only in Hawai'i
After a year of captivity, over 99% of aquarium fish are dead.
The risks far outweigh the economic benefits.
