Honorable Committee Members:
I personally have collected aquarium fish in Hawaii for 43 years. I have seen over those
forty -three years changes in some areas of the reef from foreshore development. I have
personally experienced the user conflicts that did not previously exist as the population
grew on the Big Island. What I have not seen is a decrease in the aquarium fish
populations. After 43 years, I still support myself and pay my County and State taxes
collecting aquarium fish in a sustainable manner.
Please Consider:
➢ The Aquarium Fishery in the County of Hawaii has been ongoing for forty years.
➢ The Aquarium Fishery is the most regulated of any inshore fisheries in Hawaii.
➢ There is ongoing research of the Aquarium Fishery to ensure the regulations are
sufficient.
➢ There are additional Aquarium Fishery regulations proposed that will further ensure
that the fishery remains sustainable.
In addition, Please Consider that:
➢ The Aquarium Fishery contributes to a much - needed diversified economy in the
County of Hawaii.
➢ The income from Aquarium fish collection is for the most part spent in Hawaii to
support many different businesses and spreads throughout the community.
➢ The Aquarium Fishery is an important segment of revenue for continued Inter - Island
cargo flights. These cargo flights are used by many of the agriculture and fishery
based businesses on the Big Island and an important requirement to maintaining a
diversified economy here.
➢ The fishery is the most economically valuable reef fisheries in the main Hawaiian
Islands.
We respectfully request the committee to oppose resolution 363 10 to keep the County of
Hawaii's economy as diversified as possible through a sustainable Aquarium fishery.
