Chair, County Council Planning Committee
County of Hawaii
25 Aupuni Street
Hilo, Hawa:Li 96720
Dear Ms. Leithead -Todd:
Subject: Kaniohale Subdivision; Kealakehe, North Kona, Hawaii Street
Names
The Department of Hawaiian Home Lands (DHHL) urges the support of
preserving the street names of the Kaniohale subdivision located in
Kealakehe, Hawaii. Street names for this project 'were selected under
the guidance of a committee composed of staff and individuals with
expertise and sensitivity to the Hawaiian language and culture.
Names were selected for their historical association with the
Kealakehe ahupua'a and were gathered from research of land survey
maps. The names refer to `ill or survey points found on these maps
where diacritical markings were not delineated. Adding diacritical
markings nay potentially alter the historical representation of these
`ili and :purvey points and, it is DHHL's belief that these names do
not lend themselves to simple definitions.
We request your committee's consideration of the background presented
on our selection of these street names. If you have any further
questions or concerns, please call Mr. Elmer Kaai at 586 -3839.
