Sunshine Law testimony

You will be taking up the Sunshine Law testimony too early Tuesday for me to be able to
get to Hilo to testify via videoconferencing. I have obligations to drop my daughter at
preschool and open our shop.
My husband is picking up our daughter at preschool and closing our shop to free me up to
get into Hilo to testify in the afternoon about Woodland Center (Bill 283). I am concerned
about both issues, but I am logistically unable to be present to testify regarding both.
Please note that I am against any erosion of the Sunshine Law, ie the open meetings law,
ie the people's law. I think Big Island Press Club's testimony against Kelly Greenwell's
resolution sufficiently explains why the Sunshine Law is important and should remain
untouched.
I think any politician that does not favor the Sunshine Law shouldn't be in public office.
Policymaking is not supposed to be easy. There are necessary checks and balances, and laws
requiring open meetings are to ensure all public business is conducted in public.
As for Woodland Center, Bill 283, you will hear from me Tuesday. But I want to urge
council members to hold a public hearing in Pahoa. This is one of those times when you
need to hear from the people of Pahoa in Pahoa. Many of us - -- over a 1,000 who signed a
petition - -- are concerned about the suggestion to allow certificates of occupancy prior
to intersection improvements. Please do the right thing. You could be saving a life.
