On August 17 2010, in the Human Services Committee there was a presentation scheduled in regard to Fetal Alcohol Syndrome. Unfortunately the presentation was postponed. The presenter, Dr. Ira Chasnoff, has left some flyers and has asked if it would be possible to distribute through out each district. Nine is used to remind pregnant women not to drink alcohol for the 9 months they are pregnant Fetal Alcohol Syndrome is the number one known cause for mental retardation in the United States today and it is 100% preventable. Every year in Hawaii, babies are born with lifelong disabilities resulting from the effects of alcohol consumed by the mother during pregnancy. Drinking alcohol during pregnancy can cause lifelong disabilities; birth defects and brain damage to the baby. Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorder is preventable by not drinking alcohol during pregnancy. If a woman is planning a pregnancy, she should decide to stop drinking before becoming pregnant. The safest decision a woman can make is to completely avoid beer, wine, and hard liquor during her pregnancy.
