Re: `Alae Cemetery Expansion
Transmitted herewith is a resolution authorizing the expansion of the `Alae Cemetery.
The County of Hawaii is the owner of that certain area of land known as `Alae Cemetery
and it is a public cemetery managed, maintained, and operated by the County's
Department of Parks and Recreation. The area within the existing limits of `Alae
Cemetery are nearing capacity in terms of remaining burial plots and there exists an
immediate need to provide additional plots. The County is the owner of another area of
land which is immediately mauka and adjacent to the existing `Alae Cemetery and it was
acquired specifically for the expansion of `Alae Cemetery.
As stated in the Hawaii County Code 1983 (2005 Edition, as amended), Chapter 6
(BUSINESSES), Article 1 (Cemeteries), Section 6 -1 (Prohibition), the County Council
must give its approval, by resolution, to enlarge or extend the area of any existing
cemetery. Also, Section 6 -2 (Application) under the same Article of the County Code
outlines what needs to be provided when making a request to establish, enlarge or
extend a cemetery. The County of Hawaii, Department of Parks and Recreation has
obtained all of the necessary approvals for the expansion of `Alae Cemetery and these
are included as part of the enclosed resolution.
We ask for your favorable consideration and authorization for the County of Hawaii to
expand the `Alae Cemetery.
