The Committee on Public Safety and Parks and Recreation, to which was referred Resolution No. 399-10,
reports as follows:
Resolution No. 399-10, transmitted by Mayor William P. Kenoi, via Communication No. 969, dated
October 7, 2010, a resolution authorizing the expansion of the `Alae Cemetery. .
`Alae Cemetery is a public cemetery managed, maintained and operated by the County of Hawai`i,
Department of Parks and Recreation. The cemetery is nearing capacity in terms of remaining burial plots,
and there exists an immediate need to provide additional plots. The County is the owner of Tax Map
Key (3) 2-6-012:048 consisting of approximately 11.079 acres, which is immediately mauka and adjacent
to the existing `Alae Cemetery and was acquired specifically for the expansion of`Alae Cemetery.
Pursuant to Hawai`i County Code 1983 (2005 Edition, as amended), Chapter 6 (BUSINESSES), Article 1
(Cemeteries), Section 6-1 (Prohibition) provides that no cemetery shall be established, nor shall the area
of any existing cemetery be enlarged or extended, unless approved by the County Council via a
resolution.
There was no discussion on this measure.
Your Committee on Public Safety and Parks and Recreation is in accord with the purpose and intent of
Resolution No. 399-10, and recommends its adoption.
