Recommends DLNR ban collection of reef fish!

Please support and pass this very critical piece of legislation for the preservation and protection of our reefs that
are being depleted by aggressive collecting.
The latest stats from DLNR show that during the 10 year management effort, millions of Kona Coast reef fish
have been sacrificed. The life span of an aquarium fish is drastically shorter than in the reef
7,500— Hawaiian Cleaner Wrasses (endemic species and most die within weeks)
7,700 Potters Angelfish, (endemic species and they die with weeks /months)
8.200 Moorish Idols and most of them die within weeks
11,000 Fourspot Butterfly fish most die within weeks
Tens of thousands of others plus 2.8 million yellow tangs that it is estimated 97% die with a year in captivity.
This isn't even counting all those that die in shipment or counting the manner in which they prepare them such
as starving so the fish don't spoil it's bag of water in shipment.
If these were dogs or cats everyone would be outraged that they were adopted out knowing they were doomed
to die very shortly. This is cruelty to animals.
It's estimated that Hawaii reefs generate $2 -20 million annually to the aquarium trade, however reef based
tourism generates $800 million so one can see what generates the most interest.
It's time we stopped the commercial exploration and the cruelty involved with this trade. The community
supports this Resolution. I have not talked to a single person that thought exporting our fish was right! Please
pass this resolution; it is the right thing to do.
