Please pass Resolution 363 -10 banning aquarium trade fishing on Hawaii reefs.
I have seen what a difference a ban on taking reef fish can make. I often snorkel the
protected Honolua Bay and Ahihi Kinau Reserve on Maui, and I marvel at the numbers of fish
and the wide variety that are there. Two weeks ago I saw a school of over 40 raccoon butterfly
fish within Ahihi Kinau. There are always well over a hundred yellow tangs there. Compare
that to unprotected reefs. There are many nice reefs, but almost no fish. There are almost no
yellow tangs and few butterflies, fish that are caught for the aquarium trade. They are all
gone. They have all been taken.
It makes no sense that we should allow a handful of people to take aquarium reef fish to fatten
their pocketbooks at the expense of the reef ecology and the rest of us. For the sake of the
reefs, for sake of the tourism industry, and for our own enjoyment we must ban the commercial
taking of reef fish for the aquarium trade. The old Hawaiians had a kapu system that
prevented over harvesting of fish. We need one too.
