Subject: Written Testimony for Hawaii County Council Meeting on Wednesday October 6, 2010
Surbject: MEN REAL ESTATE INVESTMENT, INC. Change of zone from Single Family Residential to
Neighborhood Commercial. TMK: 8 -1 -25:11 (Rez 10 -124)
Aloha, Chair Yoshimoto and all Hawaii county council members:
My name is Teri McGuire. I own a home located in Kealakekua, in Keala Plantation Estates (referred to hereafter
as Keala)
Keala is located adjacent to and south of the subject property for which a community Medical Center is planned.
My home will be the most effected with the Medical Center that is being planned due to my home is at the very
top of the Keala Plantation Estates.
First I would like to let you know that I would love to support the new facilities for this project. We are in need of
such a project but my concerns are as follows"
1. My lanai faces the property, with that I DO NOT care for the fact that the buildings will be able to look right
into my home. So privacy is my major concern.
2. The bus stop in front of McDonalds has many many riders and with the new facilities many more will come
into our neighborhood. So that the patrons do not walk thru our property...a possible bus stop located at
the new facilities would indeed not only benefit the future patrons there but also stop the traffic that may
walk thru our backyards as well as possible accidents crossing over Mamalahoa Hwy to get to the only bus
stop in that area.
3. Although we have heard that a chain link fence would be installed, dense foliage would need to be added
for that extra sound buffer and this would also help with privacy issues. A rock wall would be better.
4. The lighting issue at night is a large concern, my homes bedroom and lanai and living room faces the
project so if lighting can be reduced at night that would be very helpful.
In the past we have experienced unknown persons trespassing into Keala (WHICH IS PRIVATE PROPERTY)
and the Medical Center will increase this unless a barrier is done. AN ATTRACTIVE BARRIER.
Lastly, I just want to say... if my hale was your hale....what would you like to see ..... happy neighbors who
support this with beautiful foliage? Or, unhappy neighbors who on a day to day basis complain.
Again many Mahalos for your aloha and kokua! I am respectfully grateful for your considerations. I would also
love to thank Ms. Ford for taking the time to meet with the neighbors on this issue. This shows that she really
does care for the South Kona area and we appreciate this kind of government.
Me Ke Aloha
Teri McGuire
