Subject: comm.989 Kona Oceanview water improvement
To Whom it may concern,
As a resident of the Puukala neighborhood, we are deeply concerned about the lack of an adequate water facility
in our neighborhood. Our home is situated at the bottom of the street, with surrounding lots that are
undeveloped. Due to the drought, we are now surrounded by dry grasses and brush and have become deeply
concerned about the potential fire hazards. Without fire hydrants or a county water line near our property, the
slightest hint of fire could prove disastrous. Many of the homes in our community are equally posed for great
danger with only a catchment tank that can run very low at times. Without running water, the neighborhood
could go up in flames rapidly, spreading to areas such as the adjacent Makalei community that, even with water
facilities, could be overcome by the threat that Puukala road now poses.
Try to imagine not having access to the most basic of resources in an area that is surrounded by water lines.
Landscape with even most drought tolerant botanicals is now a luxury in this drought. While we try to be self
sufficient, growing our vegetables and fruit trees can come at the cost of doing laundry or some other otherwise
taken for granted daily task.
For years, we have been told that water would come to our neighborhood. So far, these have been empty
promises. I have attended numerous meetings, speaking and begging for water facilities. Unfortunately, I'm
unable to attend one of the most important meetings to date and am deeply concerned with the outcome.
Hopefully, there will be a good turnout for this meeting. I am still optimistic but can also understand the
disillusionment of my neighbors. So once again, I am asking that our requests be heard and we will be slated for
the water improvements that are so necessary to our community.
Respectfully,
Teri Labrousse
