SUBJECT: Presentation on Robert's Rules of Order
I would like to request a 20 minute presentation by the County Clerk on Robert's Rules
of Order for the December 15, 2010, Council meeting. Since we are starting a new
term and have new Council Members chairing committees, I believe a short
presentation with emphasis on the Chair's responsibilities regarding the various
motions would be beneficial for everyone.

Dear J:
Thank you for your request to have a presentation by the County Clerk on Robert's Rules of Order on
December 15, 2010. This will greatly benefit our new Council Members and their respective staff as they
may not be familiar with proper protocol relating to motions, et cetera.
I have already met with both Ms. Smart and Mr. Blas and agreed to hold training sessions with them.
These training sessions will be in the form of mock meetings and will be held in the Council Chambers.
At these trainings we will simulate actual meetings, which will give them an opportunity to run a meeting
with staff participating as Council Members. While this will prove to be very educational, it should be an
enjoyable experience as well.
There is ample time to conduct a number of mock meetings, which will better prepare Brittany and Fred
for the January Committee meetings that they each will Chair.
Once again thank you so much for your kind thoughtfulness and consideration of our new Council
Members. I believe these mock meetings will be able to accomplish your goal by helping to facilitate a
smooth transition with the new Council and staff.
