REPORT OF THE <br />COMMITTEE ON PLANNING <br />DATE: January 4, 2011 Re: Comm. 22 <br />PLACE: Sheraton Keauhou Bay Resort & Spa <br />78 -128 Ehukai Street <br />Kailua -Kona, Hawaii <br />TIME: 1:34 p.m. <br />Council Chair and Members <br />Hawaii County Council <br />Hilo, Hawaii 96720 <br />Your Committee on Planning, to which was referred Communication No. 22 reports as follows: <br />Communication No. 22 from Mayor Billy Kenoi dated December 15, 2010, requests <br />confirmation of the appointment of James McCully from the South Hilo District to the Hawaii <br />County Windward Planning Commission. Mr. McCully is a 37 -year resident of Hawaii. He is a <br />self - employed farmer at Mauna Kea Orchids and simultaneously manages real estate with <br />McCully Works. Mr. McCully's community service involves past and present membership with <br />the Hilo Puna Young Farmers, Hawaii Ginger Industry Association and the Hawaii Island <br />Chamber of Commerce. He states that he is not affiliated with any political party. If confirmed, <br />he will serve a term to end on December 31, 2015. <br />Mr. McCully was in attendance at the Hilo County Council Chambers. <br />Councilmember Onishi stated that Mr. McCully is very knowledgeable, supports smart growth <br />with proper infrastructure and supports his nomination. <br />Councilmember Yagong stated that Mr. McCully is a constituent from District 1 and asked <br />Mr. McCully why he wants to be on the Windward Planning Commission. Mr. McCully replied, <br />commenting that he has been an active nurseryman, with a lifelong background in farming. He <br />has also been a long time resident involved in youth organizations, and is pleased to bring his <br />expertise to the Commission. <br />Councilmember Yagong stated that Mr. McCully's background in Agriculture would be a <br />tremendous asset to the Windward Planning Commission and commended him for his <br />outstanding community service. <br />Councilmember Pilago acknowledged that Mr. McCully has participated in a wide range of <br />activities and has a well balanced background. <br />Mr. McCully is not required to be present at final confirmation before the full Council <br />PC Report No. 2 <br />
