Re: Voting for Recycling Coordinator and Recycling efforts
My name is .John L Tarson and I 1iN e ui the Kalopa area on the Hamakua " I
have been reading about d our deliberations regarding a rote to override 0 _° -- o of
the Ilavor `iith regard to the recycling coordinator position you have pre
authorized in the budget. I urge `ou to % ote to oA erride the veto of the M;-
preserve the rec }cling coordina tor.
Effective recycling is desperately needed on our island now and gill be izwr=
important in the future. A Cowit- er,zploy ee in charge of Cowit`iiide
efforts is most necessary if we are to mope forward in this important and
area of an overall ecological and beautification effort.
I additionally urge you to pass appropriate legislation that gill mandate C' "
Departments to set up and impiennent recN cling of all materials they use
recyclable. That would include but net be limited to office paper, newsp:.; °_ -Iss.
aluminum, and motor oil. Cowit- gos enunent needs to shore leadership the
ex:unple and standard in this extremie'_g important area that affects all of n
and the quality of life for future gr_nc rations.

Biodiesel fuel and recylcing
I would like to share one more item of importance in the realm of recNclia . Fn
not sure hove mam Count- v ehicles. generators and other pieces of equip;: <• , - re
operated a`ith diesel fuel? I would imagine it is a significant nunnber. Cum
there is a private company on Maui that manufactures diesel fuel from -% e ^ ". 'T` oil
(waste oil). Yes, fuel is being produced From a waste product that on this - r° has
some problems isitln beung recN ' his is an excellent rec effort. tith
the cost of the fuel for use in stationarN motors is 51.95 per gallon. If it is ?i
vehicles then 51 cents worth of goy eriunent taxes are added.
Use of biodiesel is both assisting aiitli tle recycling of a waste product and ? ' << aag a
fuel source that is non - polluting and renewable. I hope you a`ill direct the
appropriate County staff to look into using this fuel. Again, this an opport! -• :: for
the County to show leadership and take action in an area that supports
our beautiful island enN ironment atA the enN ironment of the planet. Tile =n
on Maui is called Pacific Biodiesel. Then. have a raebsite wWch is
a a•aavv. bio diesel. c om . They can be reached :it 877-3144. The president of t'l-
company is named Bob Bing. He can be e- mailed at liking a biodiesel.coir.
information was gathered from their iN ebsite.
This company sells fuel and it also builds plants. I would hope that C.'owit; still
immediatel -v look at using the fuel in County diesel motors AND study the
construction of a plant to be operated by the County for future fuel needs. ??',?►it
operated by the County (or its anent) coi-ld do hvo significant things. Fir4'. )uld
provide a means of productively recycling N egetable oil that currently hay
method of waste reca on our isiand at this tune. Second, it could pro -
source of clean burning and sustai cable fuel for operation of County mac': °c r~ : and
vehicles for the future. Mv wnderstardirig is that a plant could be built ff!-•
S300,000. I have no interest in this compann and the information I have
'Mth you was gathered from their website and one e-mail I sent askivag a fe
questions.
I urge you to direct ,% our staff to follow up and report to you on the currer.-' ..71ilit-
of biodiesel and the tremendous fut -re benefits that could be accrued to t
and its residents.
