Hi I am kai inaba and I have lived in waimea all my life. During
my freshmen year our art class took a trip to the waste
management center by Waikoloa. The original Intention was a
dumpster diving art project, but what we found exposed its self as
far more valuable than a few pieces of cool trash. In a thirty year
old landfill there were mainly various types of metals and plastics.
The plastics appeared to resemble the striations of muscle tissue
across the layers of other decayed items, rocks, and dirt. These
brittle old plastic bags from thirty years ago tell us today that even
though we may not pollute plastic bags, which happens far to
often, the bags we dump at transfer stations still exist thirty years
later. The term "out of sight out of mind" applies heavily here.
Although we stop thinking about the plastic bags after we discard
them, they still pollute our environment. I feel that living in Hawaii
where various climates and ecosystems exist; we have the
responsibility, the kuleana, to take care of the land that nurtures us.
Therefore I support this plastic bag reduction bill.
