Since the year 1965 the world has gotten worse in many ways, The Beatles broke up, The
Pakistanis Hijackers, John Lennon's death, the Haiti earthquake, and many more. Alas, something worse
that has slipped the minds of everyone has also happened; the creation of plastic bags. These supposedly
"helpful shopping bags" are harmless right? Wrong! The bags of death have been becoming a problem
throughout the years whether it has caused deaths or made a once fertile world to look like a dump.
Something has to be done.
Plastic shopping bags have been a menace to our environment since 1965. When Sten Gustaf Thulin of
Sweden invented them he had no idea what was going to happen to the world because of his creation. At
first not that many people used his idea, but that changed in the late 1970s. Since then most stores that
sell almost anything use them, stores form jewelry to food to toys, they switched because they were
cheaper and took up less space. What they did not know was they effect on the environment.
The effect of his creation has been terrible on the environment. 270 species are known to have suffered
from plastic bag pollution. They get killed from bags wrapping around their fins or neck suffocating them. If they
need to move to breath they are immobile because they have no use of their fins. Birds have not been spared
either, more than 1 million bird die each year form plastic bag suffocation. Even humans have not been spared
from this pollution, 25 kids die annually from plastic bag suffocation. `

Luckily there are ways to prevent this disaster. First you can get into the habit of bringing your
re- usable shopping bags to the store. If you do not own one you can but one. Secondly you can make a
speech to your council about getting bags banned in your county. If we do get them banned the answer
will not be paper bags. The answer lies with canvas bags.
Little by little this world will end up like something out of a movie if we don't do anything about
this crisis. But there is a solution out of this hole we dug ourselves in since 1965. Even though it is a
gaping hole we can work together to climb out of it, and make a nice fresh new plot of land. The
solution is a canvas bag. Instead of buying some gum or soda with your pocket change how about
spending it on something that will do good like a canvas bag for just under a dollar. This is the solution
and we should start now. Whether it's one bag at a time or one million, the world will change into a
better place.
