The following message regarding an appointment to our regional planning commission is as important as it is
disturbing. Kona residents want a change from unbridled growth, and they deserve a break from "business as usual"
rubber - stamping of any and all development. This means that we also need and deserve a representative on the
all- important, decision - making Hawai' I County Leeward Planning Commission who understands the significance of
protecting the land and culture of our island, especially when it comes to fragile Conservation lands.
I urge you to chime in on this potential appointment as outlined below.
Please ask your County reps to choose a person who better understands the concepts of Smart Growth and who
honors the Kona Community Development Plan as a guide to future land use planning. (Maybe that person is you
or someone you know. If it is, please call the County Planning Department to apply for the planning commission
position.)

I just noticed Mark Travalino of the Hawai'i Laborers Union has been nominated to replace Fred Housel on the
Leeward Planning Commission. This nomination is slated to be discussed at the Tues. Jan. 4th county council
planning committee, at 1:30pm, at the Keauhou Sheraton.
Please try to make this meeting - at the very least, please send testimony to: "Brenda Ford"

I don't know Mr. Travalino personally but I do know that he spoke strongly in favor of development of conservation
land at 'O'oma and I think the idea of jobs at any cost sets a bad planning precedent for our community. I certainly
wouldn't want this man to be the deciding vote for the upcoming Holualoa Bay /Lyman's hearing before the Leeward
Planning Commission on Feb, 16 -17 -18th. We need balance on our planning commission and I think Mark Travalino
would be a very bad choice. Please voice your opinion!
