Aloha Governmental Relations Committee members!
It is important to fully support this redistricting plan! If the rules are not spelled
out in the County code, there are those who will disregard the laws set by the U.S.
Supreme Court. A fair, equitable and legal redistricting plan is what is needed and
needed now. The additional criteria that is proposed by Councilwoman Ford gives the
Redistricting Commissioners, when appointed, a real understanding of the law on
redistricting. Also, these criteria give the public the rules by which the Commission:
must draw council district boundaries.
As you know, Puna was the largest loser in the previous redistricting plan, which is
definitely not fair. Let's hope that the new redistricting (reapportionment) plan will be
justly and fairly drawn. If the public does not feel it is, then these additional
criteria provide the court with the rules by which the redistricting plan must be drawn,
should it come to (another) court case.
Please support these new rules and give all Hawaii Island citizens a fair redistricting
plan.
