Subject: Support for Redistricting Bill 18
Aloha Hawaii County Council,
I am writing in support of the Redistricting Bill 18 introduced by Councilmember Brenda Ford.
This legislation should close the loopholes that allowed the gerrymandering of the Puna district
during the last redistricting. With the population increases during the past ten years, Puna
census figures are likely to support this bill's requirements for forming two separate council
districts, Puna mauka and Puna makai.
The County can i I I af continued lawsuits that are brought on by a public perception that
government officials are tampering with the drawing of district lines in order to empower one
voting group unfairly over another. Ms. Ford has produced a thorough, fair and well-reasoned bill
to correct unethical practices in the past and to support fairness in Hawaii County's future.
