Having been born and raised on the Big Island, I find it necessary to take
affirmative action to try to protect the `aina. Sometimes, while driving on the Queen K or
Mamalahoa highways, I see plastic bags stuck to wire fences or blown against wooden
posts and tree branches. Hopefully, by passing this bill implementing an immediate
reduction in the use of plastic bags, it will directly impact the amount of plastics being
blown around in the wind. In an article I found from BBC news, Ireland, in order to
reduce their plastic bag consumption, has started to charge all customers 150 for a new
bag. Three months later, everything seems to be working and one store reports a 97.5%
drop in the number of bags it distributes.
Although this bill may not cause such substantial gains in the war against plastics,
it would be an excellent foundation to start from. The data gathered after the reductions
occur may prove very beneficial if further action was to be taken. I believe that this bill
would ultimately be advantageous whether or not anything else comes from it because a
reduction in waste is still better than no reduction at all.
