I wish that we could ban ALL plastic bags, not
just on the Big Island, but the entire state. Maui and
Kauai have already banned plastic bags. There are
many reasons why.
I believe that we should ban plastic bags because
of our environment. We have limited space on the
islands of Hawaii for landfills. Plastic takes up most of
this space in landfills. Also, most plastic bags end up
in our oceans, putting our endangered and protected
species in harm. Including our beautiful reefs. It also
makes our towns and beaches look much cleaner.
Banning plastic bags also saves money and fossil
fuels. By banning plastic bags, we save money by not
shipping oil or plastic bags. Fossil fuels are a limited
resource that we should not waste; they take millions
of years to create. Also by not shipping the plastic
bags or oil, or creating the plastic bags, we save
pollution in our atmosphere.
