Subject: Support for Bill 17, Plastic Bag Reduction Bill
Aloha Councilmembers,
I urge you to support Bill 17, the Plastic Bag Reduction Bill.
At my business, Island Naturals Markets, we eliminated throwaway plastic shopping bags over 2 years
ago. The result has been a benefit to the business and the environment, with no negative impacts.
Customers have learned to change their habits and either bring a reusable bag, use a paper bag, or simply
realize no bag is needed.
We encouraged the change to reusable bags with incentives and education. The level of acceptance is
remarkable. Over half our customers bring their own bags, happy to support waste reduction and protect
our environment.
Most people want to reduce our impact on the environment and live as green as possible, but for many
it's hard to know where to start. The Plastic Bag Reduction bill, just like Hi -5 recycling, is a step in the
right direction.
Please support Bill 17.
Mahalo.
