Subject: Plastic Bag Reduction Proposal
Hello,
my name is Tyler McCullough and I am a sophomore at Parker School in Waimea. I was told by a
teacher at my school that the council was considering a reduction in plastic bags. I wanted to advocate
my strong support for this campaign and urge the council to realize what it brings. First off, plastic bags
as we all know are seemingly taking over, even here on the island. While they are known to be in large
part in our oceans even as I drive to school in the morning I see them on the side of the road especially
when they get caught on barb -wire fences. So in the small picture, I think the reduction would reduce the
number of harmful plastic bags in our community. In addition, when I go to the grocery store I see
"ReBag's" for sale pretty cheaply as well as many other people already using their "ReBags ". In the big
picture, I feel that passing a bill for the reduction of plastic bags in the community would enhance the
already prestigious title of the Big Island. The fact that neighboring islands have already taken steps to
reduce or even better ban plastic bags I feel is an indication that we should follow suit. In the immidiate
run, reducing plastic bags would be a good thing for us and the environment and that may even lead to
the larger goal of overall elimination of plastic bags.
