Plastic Bag Reduction Testimony
Submitted by Grade 4 students of Mrs. Hale's class
Holualoa Elementary School
January 31, 2011
We are a 4 th grade class of Holualoa Elementary School. Our class has been studying and
discussing how plastic is impacting our environment and our wildlife.
We support the Plastic Bag Reduction Bill. Plastics, which include plastic bags, are
polluting our oceans. When plastic breaks down they become toxic, endangering and
killing our ocean and land animals. Plastic bags have been known to kill our native
species. If plastic bags are floating in the water honu often mistake them for jelly fish
and will eat it; as a result they die. Birds have been known to get tangled in plastic and
sometimes feed it to their young. Plastic breaks down into toxic poisons that threaten
our coral reefs. We also see plastic bags polluting our land. They get stuck on fences
and in trees. Also by reducing the number of plastic bags we use, we will reduce the
amount of garbage in our landfills.
We know that the change that this bill brings may cost businesses more because paper
bags are more expensive than plastic bags, but we know that at the end we will all pay if
we don't start making a change. The Plastic Bag Reduction Bill will help us to reduce
the amount of pollution we are creating. This bill may also encourage people in our
community to be more aware of the importance of a more sustainable island.
If we want our island to be clean, beautiful, we should stop or reduce our use of plastic
bags. We want to be able to enjoy the natural beauty of our island home and we hope the
same for our kids too.
