The grant's purpose is to improve the department's ability to respond to violent crimes against women through ongoing specialized training for the Juvenile Aid Section detectives. A Specialized Investigative Training Grant account was appropriated for $55,000 in anticipation of grant funding for FY2010 -11. Earlier this year, the Police Department accepted grant funds for this program in the amount of $31,298 which was reported to Council. In order to accept an additional grant of $47,438, with nearly identical parameters, the Police Department wishes to appropriate an additional $23,736 to this account. Enclosed is a bill for an ordinance amending the Operating Budget by increasing the total appropriation in the Specialized Investigative Training Grant account by $23,736. REQUEST: To appropriate an additional $23,736.00 under the Specialized Investigative Training Grant under account number 010.201.5216.25.115. See calculations below. In anticipation of getting this Specialized Investigative Training grant, $55,000 was budgeted for this fiscal year. Earlier this year, Police received and reported to the Council the grant amounting to $31,298. Since then, we received another secondary grant for this program, with nearly identical parameters for utilizations, for $47,438. The total appropriation of this grant program needs to be increased by $23,736 in order to accommodate the additional fund allocation. B. BACKGROUND AND JUSTIFICATION (USE ADDITIONAL SHEETS AS NEEDED): The State Department of the Attorney General Crime Prevention and Justice Assistance Division is providing a grant to improve Hawaii County's ability to respond to violent crimes against women through ongoing specialized training for the JAS detectives focused on the most current methods in investigating violence against women cases.
