Your Committee on Finance, to which was referred Resolution No. 281-00, reports as follows:
Resolution No. 281-00, transmitted by Council Chairman James Y. Arakaki, via Communication
No. 844, dated July 7, 2000, authorizes the acceptance of a donation from the Hawaii Island
Japanese Community Association. A letter of appreciation will be sent to Mr. Yukio Takeya,
President of the Hawaii Island Japanese Community Association, P.O. Box 1124, Hilo, Hawaii
96721, acknowledging this generous donation.
The Hawaii Island Japanese Community Association has graciously donated an "OJIZO-
SAMA" statue to the County of Hawaii to be placed in the Lili`uokalani Gardens in Hilo to
enhance the appearance of the Gardens. The value of this donation is estimated at $1,500.00.
Pursuant to Article XIII, Section 13-12, Hawaii County Charter, the Council, on behalf of the
County, may accept gifts or donations of personal property.
Some members of Your Committee requested that the Office of the Corporation Counsel clarify
the validity of the aforementioned gift as it pertains to the "Church and State" issue prior to the
next Council meeting.
Your Committee on Finance is in accord with the purpose and intent of Resolution No. 281-00
and recommends its adoption.
