Dear Council Members,
Please support the current system of two furloughs per month instead of a pay
decrease!
I work for our County Parks and Recreation Department. My responsibilities have
increased because vacant positions have been eliminated. Through teamwork
our office still provides a decent level of service. Two furlough days a month
provide more money toward the County shortfall than the proposed 5% pay cuts
without furloughs. Everyone in the system that I have spoken to agrees; they
want the days off instead of a pay cut. Our furlough days allow us to rest and
prevent burnout. Furlough days give us time for all the other responsibilities we
have. Furlough days help our families. The benefit of furloughs gives us choices
about how to maximize this precious time for our families, for creating other
sources of income, and finally for taking care of ourselves: something working
women seldom do.
My husband is disabled; I have two adult children and two grandchildren living at
home. My 79 year old mother on Oahu requires surgery at the end of the
summer. I need those furlough days! So far we have adjusted our family budget
to accommodate my decreased furlough paychecks. Time for my self and my
family enriches my life in ways that an extra 5% salary with less time off will not.
I sincerely hope we are able to continue our furlough Fridays twice a month.
