No. 164/Res. 61 -11 PLACE: Council Chambers West Hawai`i Civic Center 74 - 5044 Ane Keohokalole Highway, Building A Kona, Hawai`i 96740 TIME: 11:32 a.m. Council Chair and Members Hawai`i County Council Hilo, Hawaii 96720 Your Committee on Agriculture, Water and Energy Sustainability, to which was referred Resolution No. 61 -11, reports as follows: Resolution No. 61 -11, transmitted by Mayor William P. Kenoi, via Communication No. 164 dated April 5, 2011, adopting and supporting the 2010 County of Hawai`i Agriculture Development Plan. The 2010 County of Hawai`i Agriculture Development Plan was created with input from the community at large and the segment engaged in agriculture activities. It incorporates agricultural policies and recommended actions that can be accomplished by the County. The goals, objectives and action plans will strengthen the agriculture industry by producing food, fiber, energy and ornamentals for local production and export. Research and Development Director Randy Kurohara and Agriculture Specialist Margarita Hopkins were present to answer questions from the Councilmembers. Director Kurohara thanked the Kohala Center, Agricon LLC and the agriculture community for their involvement and asked the Councilmembers to support the resolution. Many members of Your Committee felt the plan lacked specific detail. For instance the Council would like the plan to include more specific time frames along with budget allocation and funding sources for each issue in the plan. In fact, Mr. Hoffmann requested that two projects come forth as appropriations at the May 4, 2011 Council meeting. Some members suggested additional agricultural issues to add to the plan to enhance sustainability. Also Federal, State and County partnership was encouraged.
