SUBJECT: Support for Resolution 73 -11 Regarding Donation from K. Taniguchi, Ltd. of
Seven (7) Automated External Defibrillators
Dear Chair Yagong and Council Members:
The Department of Public Works ( "DPW ") strongly supports acceptance of the generous
donation of seven (7) Automated External Defibrillators ( "AED ") from K. Taniguchi, Ltd. for the
West Hawai'i Civic Center. DPW thanks K. Taniguchi Ltd. for this donation that is a tremendous
benefit and service to the community.
The West Hawai'i Civic Center facility has a floor area of 61,816 square feet, encompassing
seven buildings and one pavilion. There are approximately 220 employees at the facility and
approximately 200 members of the public visit the facility each day.
Sudden cardiac arrest is a leading cause of death among adults over forty years of age in the
United States. According to the American Heart Association, when CPR and defibrillation are
provided within eight minutes of a cardiac arrest episode, a person's chance of survival
increases. The availability of these AED at the West Hawai'i Civic Center could make the
difference in the event of a sudden cardiac arrest incident.
DPW respectfully requests that the Hawaii County Council accept this generous donation.
