Dear Chairman Yagong and Council Members;
RE: Proposed Amendment to Bill 29, Draft 2
Following are the transit agency's responses to the proposed reductions to the Mass
Transit Agency's operating budget for FY 2011 -12.
Account 114 — Mass Transit Agency OCE — Electricity
Electricity costs for our agency have increased steadily over the years. Funds are used to
pay for electrical costs for our garage, transit office, Mooheau Bus Terminal, and the
adjacent police substation. The budgeted amount will allow us to cover our costs without
having to use other funds that are programmed for other uses such as bus service.
The proposed reduction of $4,000 should not be approved.
Account 228 — Mass Transit Agency OCE — Bus Parts
The bus parts budget is necessary in order to keep our buses in safe operating condition to
transport our bus riders. Passenger safety is our highest priority, and having sufficient
funding for bus parts is vital to ensure the safety of our vehicles for our riders. We are
not transporting goods, but our residents and visitors.
Being unable to repair our buses in a satisfactory manner may force us to "down" buses
due to insufficient funding.
The proposed reduction of $5,000 should not be approved.
