After attending both the walk through on Old Government Road and council meeting at
Naalehu Community Center, it amazes me the energy spent on this topic.
Unlike people on both sides of this issue, are totally new to this community, so we have
no agenda. The view at the end of the road is spectacular. Like thousands of other
places all over these islands. And, there is no additional cost to get to these locations.
My husband and I are both retired educators and business owners. I have volunteered in
the local schools and appalled at the condition of some of the classrooms. The first time
volunteering in Naalehu elementary, it was like stepping back 20 years in education.
The condition of the classrooms, materials, equipment, etc. were in sad shape. Maybe
these local community members have no vested interest in our schools, but they should
all spend some time touring the schools in this community and compare where dollars
could be focused.
Recently, a local member of Naaleuh made the statements in West Hawaii Today these
sites rich in early Hawaiian history, ruins and scared places honored by Hawaiians and
protected by the state. Well, lets leave it just the way it is. Put our dollars on our future,
not our past and think about some needs of our local educators.
Thank you for the time and energy you invest in your community. There is never a
"right" answer, and people who make statements about you serving taxpayers, obviously
have never spent time on the other side of the table.
