SUPPORT FOR COUNTY OF HAWAII AGRICULTURAL DEVELOPMENT PLAN
Aloha Hawaii County Council Members,
I am writing on behalf of the Board of Directors of the Hawai`i Forest Industry Association (HFIA) and
would like to voice our support for the County of Hawai`i Agricultural Development Plan and
recommend its adoption. As President of HFIA, I am very pleased that forestry is recognized in this Plan
as an important economic driver and I would like to offer our assistance in developing specific plans for
energy production, import replacement, community planting projects, conservation efforts, and/or
commercial planting. We know that forestry offers many values to our landscape including open space,
wildlife habitat, watershed protection, and recreational opportunities. Well managed forests can
simultaneously provide much needed jobs and further independence from expensive imports.
Our membership has extensive experience in developing and implementing best management practices for
Hawai`i and is willing to look at partnerships to create resources on available county lands. We
appreciate your continued support in our efforts throughout the state.
We feel that this Plan provides a good blueprint for where we would like to go and will keep us prepared
as funding opportunities arise.
Sincerely,
(1
