Dear Mr. Yagong,
How can we disband the Hawaii County Band which has provided the public with music of all types for
over 125 years to the community of Hilo?
I am writing to you in hopes that you will continue to support the Hawaii County Band. My son, who is
currently a French Horn player at the Hilo Intermediate School, introduced our whole family to the
creative and professional music of the Hawaii County Band. We have enjoyed many concerts together
as a family. It is wonderful to listen to a band consisting of community members which include high
school friends, college students, music teachers and band directors. Knowing that there is an
opportunity for students to gain experience playing with the Hawaii County Band has given our son an
extra incentive to practice his music, and he has talked about a day in the future when he would like to
play with the Hawaii County Band.
There are so many reasons why the Band is important for the community of Hilo!!
1. It provides wonderful music to anyone who would like to listen.
2. The County Band plays at many community events - live music is an essential part of this
community.
3. Hilo has supported the Hawaii County Band for over 125 years.
4. Local professional musicians are able to play together, have fun, and provide an inspiration to our
youth who are involved in music.
5. Local college and high school students who excel in music are able to join the ensemble and play to
broaden their experience with music.
6. We need to make responsible choices to deal with our budget, and disbanding the Hawaii County
Band is not a responsible decision.
