Dear Mr. Chairman and Members of the Council:
I am Paige De Lima. I volunteer to be a member of the Committee with People with
Disabilities and presently serve as its Chairperson. It is my understanding that the
budget allocated for the committee is very modest, $3,200 per fiscal year.
Members volunteer their time. Funds are primarily used to pay for sign language
interpreters and to assist the disabled community to participate.
Recently our adhoc committees are becoming more active and a decrease in the
budget will hinder participation of the disabled community.
I understand that the proposed reduction is $1,200. This sum of money will have a
real impact and limit the disabled community from participating and provide little
relief to the overall budget scenario.
Yesterday, I was made aware of the proposed reduction and I may not be accurate in
relaying the extent of the proposed cut, however, the spirit of any reduction will be
more of statement of priorities and concerns.
I regret that I will not be able to appear in person and that this matter was not
raised earlier so that the committee could have addressed the proposal.
