To: The Honorable Mayor Billie Kenoi and Members of the Hawaii County Council
1) The County Band nurtures the young musicians in the community
• The Band is the only resource for the talented to compete and go forth in
mainland competition
• Students who've come through the Band ensemble have currently gone on
to study at Harvard, Indiana University School of Music, University of
Wisconsin, Colorado State University and the University of Hawaii, Manoa
• An example is 16 -year old Sarah Nako from Hilo High who currently
performs in the Hawaii County Band. From this experience she can now go
forward anywhere to have a successful career in music
2) The Band is a truly professional ensemble
• This is why we are able to nurture the students
• The Band is a well -oiled machine with momentum and direction
• The Band keeps the spirit of our Hawaiian culture alive
3) The are only two ways to judge genius: music and math
