Honorable Chairman Yagong and members of the Hawaii County Council,
I am here to share my feelings on why the Hawaii County Band and West Hawaii County Band should not
be eliminated. I have been a musician with the Hawaii County Band for most of my adult life. One of the
best parts of this job is going out into our communities to share in their festivities. I am always humbled
by the appreciation that is shown towards the band wherever we play. I am also humbled knowing that
mv service time is only a tinv bit of the band's 128 year existence. It is truly an honor to be a part of such
a historical band.
When the bands were on the chopping block last year, we were told that we weren't essential. It was a
hurtful choice of words and we did our best to convince last year's council otherwise. People showed so
much support for us last year, so it's disappointing to find ourselves on the block again. Honestly, I am
very upset at Ms. Ford's proposal to eliminate the unique service our historical bands provide to the
entire island in order to seemingly patch the budget, while requesting millions in development. At a time
when we're constantly reminded that the county has no money and I'm facing the possibility of losing
my county job, this proposal and requests feel like a slap in the face.
I urge you to please not let the bands slip away. They bring joy to many on the island. I see the people,
keiki to kupuna, dancing at concerts and parades and it would be shameful if this was taken away from
them. My hope is that you'll see beyond the few years that you serve and really think about Hawaii
county's future when making this decision.
