To: counciltestimony @co.hawaii.hi.us Cc: Dan Lindsay Subject: re Ford amendment to budget To the Hawai`i County Council: I ask that you defeat Councilperson Ford's amendment to the budget defunding the County Band. The band is a rare resource which should not be sacrificed to a temporary financial emergency. Our County Band was founded in 1884. It has survived the overthrow of the monarchy, annexation, the Great Depression, and two world wars. Whether we suffered droughts, tsunamis, or volcanic eruptions, our County Band played on. It has brought beauty, inspiration, consolation, and delight to Hawai`i Island's people for over a century. It is a source of inspiration, of pride, of beauty for all the citizens of this island. Our County Band is not a luxury. It is not expendable. It is not a frill. It is an integral part of what makes life on Hawai`i Island the wonderful nurturing experience we all treasure. The county provides many important services, but there are few which bring as much pleasure into our lives as does our County Band. Now, due to an emergency which is not even serious enough for the County Council to rescind the raises they received in 2008, it is proposed to destroy this cultural icon in the name of financial need. To say this is a shortsighted measure is a gross understatement. Please do not destroy something so important to so many people. Save our County Band. Please defeat Ms. Ford's budget amendment.
