I ! ` To: counciltestimony @co.hawaii.hi.us Subject: Support the Hawaii County Band Dear Sir or Madam: I am not from Hawaii, but I want to support the Hawaii County Band and remind you that the program has incredible value. My band experience so far has included middle school concert band, high school concert band and marching band, and Big Ten college marching band, all of which have been phenomenal learning experiences that have greatly contributed to my personal growth. I decided to join band originally when the local band came to my elementary school during the spring of my fifth grade year. If I had not been able to watch them perform as I did, my whole life would have taken a different course - not for the better. Eliminating funding from the Hawaii County Band says that the arts do not matter, which is not at all true. Music has become an important part of my life, and I would hate for other students to never experience music and not be inspired to take part in it themselves. By not funding this band, you are sending a message to the community and its young people that music and the arts are irrelevant when it absolutely is not. Please think twice before voting for Ms. Ford's amendment tomorrow. Music is a vital part of a community; please do not lose that in Hawaii.
