RE: West Hawaii County Band Budget 2011 -2012
Dear Council Members:
I am Dr. Ted Leaf, founder and past president of the West Hawaii County Eand Friends
(501 c3), and former Band volunteer member.
Please fund the Bands! No grants for the West Hawaii County E:,nd Friends ':nave been
received during the current fiscal year — we believe because of the yoor economy.
The budget for the West Hawaii County Band is only $23,167,00 (Which dos not
include volunteers and students who play with the West Hawaii County Band), but the
East Hawaii County Band is $262.089.00.
This is quite a disparity! True, the East Hawaii Band has more : per. 1 -s, bt ; does
not explain why the East Hawaii Band budget is more than ten : _ :ate ; - than the
West Hawaii Band budget. Under our severe budgetary restraints, e d ; no: fee` that the
East Hawaii Band should continue to have a full time paid direc:or — we believe about
$60.000 per year..
In the extreme event that the vote should be to defund both ban i:s, we suggest that each
band member be paid $1.00 per year. That would allow for the ; ov, e_ed under
County Liability Insurance, buses for travel and to continue , . :School
band rooms for rehearsals at no charge,
